Churchill Downs

Located in Louisville, Kentucky, Churchill Downs is situated on Central Avenue. This place has been around since 1875 and is said to be the best thoroughbred race track in the world. It was renovated in 2005 for a cool price of $121 million dollars. It is most famous for hosting the Kentucky Derby. It has also hosted the Breeders Cup 6 times over the past years. It is said that this event is one of the most exciting in sports history to watch. I don't know about that, but the hats that the women wear whiled in attendance are amazing! Thanks and a shout out to Julie Hatch for "kickin up her heels" to get me this sample. And I am really glad she didn't have to "pony-up" her phone number to repay the guy that went down to the track to get this for me!

Berry, Illinois Eddieville, Kentucky

These 2 samples were sent along with some Dominican Republic dirt from Rodney Brooks. The dirt from Berry Illinois is fun to look at mainly because it's not from somewhere famous but just another "home town" sample. The good folks at the Hampton Inn in Eddieville actually hooked my family up with a great rate after they had the misfortune of a flat tire. Dirt will be dirt.

Dominican Republic Digs

I received a LITTLE envelope the other day with a BIG gift inside! Lots and lots of dirt from my "family" in Alabama, the Brooks Clan. They sent me a sample of dirt that was beautiful from the Dominican Republic where Beau was playing baseball. He and several other boys of summer spent about 3 weeks there, working on their baseball skills and extending their season. The dirt is several shades of red and orange and is very dry. It has a texture of almost ground rock. But then again, isn't that what all dirt is? Also included was a ,sample from Eddieville, Kentucky where, chance would have it, a flat tire inspired the gathering of dust just for me! Thank you once again to my friends in Bama!

On and off the FIELD

Few things get me excited about new dirt in my collection as the beginning of a new baseball season! Growing up as a kid I followed the Cincinnati Reds and I was a huge Pete Rose fan! I once got to see him in person in San Francisco when we watched the Giants and Reds in a double header. I also attended a couple of Los Angeles Dodgers games as well. Now, living in Orem Utah I have the opportunity to live right around the corner from where the Orem Owlz Baseball team plays. They are the rookie affiliate in the farm system of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. They arrive each year around mid June and can play as long as mid September. Not only have they played in the league championship game for the past 3 of 4 years, they have won it 2 times! I share this because we are a "host family" to players while they are here. We have had 13 players live with us over the last 4 years along with numerous others who have come just to hang out. Because we share our home with them, they often share their "dirt" with us! Both on and off the field! The following collection is in chronological order and is the dirt from their home towns.
